Commitment of management to promote equality

The purpose of an equality plan is to promote an equal and non-discriminatory organisational culture. Equality planning is most effective when the objectives and practices related to the promotion of equality are clearly expressed and discussed together with the entire organisation. The task of the management is to create the preconditions for this, because equality planning is an ongoing process that requires leadership.

It is good for the management to discuss what equality and non-discrimination mean in the organisation and what are the hopes and aims for equality planning. The discussion may also be conducted with the support of an external coach.

Equality planning is on a strong footing when its objectives support the organisation’s values and strategy. It is important that management monitors the planning process carefully so that, even as the process progresses, the equality plan remains part of the overall management of the organisation.
