For those who have encountered racism

  • You may contact the Office of the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman if you encounter racism. This authority is always highly approachable.

  •  If you encounter racism at school, then you may bring it to the attention of the education provider or educational institution, such as a teacher or principal. The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman can advise you on how to deal with discrimination.

  • Contact your immediate supervisor first if you experience discrimination at work. If your supervisor proves unhelpful, then contact your elected occupational safety representative or shop steward. You may also contact your regional Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which officially oversees discrimination at work.

  • Contact the police if you have been the victim of a racist criminal offence, meaning a crime for which the perpetrator had a racist motive. You may also seek help from Victim Support Finland.

  • Remember that the Finnish Association for Mental Health maintains a 24/7 Finnish language crisis hotline on +358 9 252 50111 if you need to talk to someone. You may call the crisis hotline anonymously and in confidence. The crisis hotline is available in the Swedish and Arabic languages at certain times, and you may also talk informally to someone in English. See the website of the Finnish Association for Mental Health for further details.
